Al Milby Animal Photography

One of my favourite animals to photograph is the Red Squirrel. They’re becoming an increasingly rare sight, which makes every encounter feel even more special. Since the introduction of the non-native Grey Squirrel, the Red population has sadly declined. The greys not only carry a pox that is fatal to reds, but they also reproduce at a much higher rate, meaning they continue to outnumber them. Capturing images of Red Squirrels is something I value highly, and I never photograph grey squirrels.

Wildlife Photography

Wildlife photography is all about patience.

I’m prepared to wait for as long as it takes to get the right shot. That might mean hours of walking, climbing or simply standing still and observing. Recently, I spent two hours walking up a mountain, followed by another two hours tracking a Mountain Hare, carefully finding the right position to photograph without disturbing it.

The welfare of the animal always comes first. I make sure I keep a respectful distance so I don’t interfere with their natural behaviour. That patience, along with a deep respect and understanding of wildlife, is what makes my photographs what they are.

Pet Photography

I photograph far more than just dogs, cats and rabbits. Whatever your pet, I’m always happy to work with you to capture them properly.

My goal is not just to photograph your pet, but to capture their personality. I take the time to build a connection, both before and during the shoot, creating a relaxed and comfortable environment. That’s what allows me to produce natural images that truly reflect them.

Dogs

With dogs, I offer both portrait and action photography.

If your dog enjoys running, jumping and playing, I can capture those moments as well as calmer, more posed portraits. It’s all about showing their personality and creating images that make you smile.

Do you need to prepare?

No special preparation is needed. If you’d like action shots, it’s best not to feed them too much beforehand, as I use treats for games and rewards during the session.

Cats

Cats do things on their own terms, and I work around that.

I take my time, often sitting on the floor with them and letting them come to me. I bring treats to help build trust, but there’s no rushing the process. These sessions can take a little longer, but it’s worth it to capture those genuine, natural moments.

Do you need to prepare?

Long-haired cats should be brushed to remove any knots.

Indoor Rabbits

If your rabbit lives indoors, sessions can take place comfortably without worrying about the weather.

Do you need to prepare?

Long-haired rabbits should be brushed. Short-haired rabbits need no preparation.

Outdoor Rabbits

Outdoor sessions are available on light, dry days, with sunshine always helping to bring out the best in the images.

Reptiles

I’m happy to work with most reptiles and capture them safely and respectfully.

Birds

From small pet birds like budgies through to birds of prey, I’m able to photograph a wide range of species, always adapting to suit their behaviour and environment.
